Progress beyond the state of the art

A composite is a combination of selected filler or reinforcing agent and a compatible matrix binder with the aim of obtaining properties superior to those of their components.

One of NATEX objectives is the promotion of natural fibres (hemp and flax) in structural applications where traditional glass fibres are being used today. The new biocomposites from natural fibres and thermoplastic biopolymers will bring improvements in terms of biodegradability, disposal and mechanical properties.

Today, most polymer matrix composites using natural fibres as reinforcement are being used in non-structural applications, due to several limitations. NATEX aims to go beyond this stage due to its various fibre preparations, yarn manufacturing, polymer selections and processing technologies. It will also build on exiting composites based on natural fibres projects and deliver different final applications, higher innovations by including the whole chain –from fibre extractions to processing technologies.
